When You Can’t See The Plan
Scripture
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”
-Isaiah 55:8–9 (NLT)
Have you ever looked at your life and thought, what in the world are You doing, God? Most of us have been there. Life veers off the script we had written in our minds, and suddenly we find ourselves in unfamiliar, even painful territory. The job falls through. The relationship ends. The diagnosis comes. And in the tension between what we hoped for and what actually happened, the questions rise. Why this? Why now? Why me? Isaiah's words meet us in that place with something we desperately need. Not an explanation. A perspective. God's thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are far beyond anything we could imagine.
That comparison Isaiah reaches for is worth sitting with. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than ours. That is not just poetry. It is humbling. It means there will be times when things will not make sense, not because God is absent or indifferent, but because He is operating on a level we cannot yet see or comprehend. We are finite. He is infinite. We see one chapter. He holds the whole story. And the God who holds the whole story is also the God who entered it. He is a Father who proved His love for us on the cross. That changes everything about how we sit with the mystery.
"God in His love always wills what is best for us. In His wisdom He always knows what is best, and in His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about."¹
— Jerry Bridges, Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts
Bridges understood what Isaiah is pointing us toward. When life feels upside down, the anchor is not an answer. It is a Person. A God whose love, wisdom, and sovereignty all work together on our behalf, even when we cannot trace the threads. That is what faith looks like in practice. Not having all the answers, but continuing to follow the One who does. Not every question will be answered this side of eternity, but every step can be taken in trust. His ways are higher than ours. His plans are wiser. And even when the road twists in ways we would not choose, He is still leading. Still faithful. Still for us.
Reflection:
- What is an area of your life right now where God's ways feel confusing or difficult to understand?
- How might remembering God's higher perspective help you shift from frustration to faith?
- What truths about God's character can you cling to when His plan does not match your expectations?
Prayer:
Ask God for the strength to trust Him when life does not make sense. Thank Him for being wise, sovereign, and good in all things. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you surrender control and walk in peace, knowing that His ways are higher than yours.
