Faith in the Face of Fear
Scripture
I am constantly hounded by those who slander me,
and many are boldly attacking me.
But when I am afraid,
I will put my trust in you.
I praise God for what he has promised.
I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 56:2–4 (NLT)
The world can be a cruel place. It's not uncommon to find yourself in conflict with others, sometimes with acquaintances, coworkers, or even family. There are countless ways division creeps in, and words can wound deeper than you expect.
In this psalm, David shows us the path forward. Surrounded by enemies, he doesn't seek revenge or to justify himself. Instead, he turns his heart toward God. "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You." David's courage is not found in his own strength but in God's faithful presence.
You can take comfort in knowing that the Lord is your defender. He upholds your cause, sees every injustice, and promises never to leave you. If your trust is in Him, what can people really do to you? They can wound your pride or speak against you, but they cannot take away what matters most, your identity and future in Christ.

That's exactly the trade David is making in this psalm. He fears God, so the slander and attacks lose their grip on him. Walking in this truth gives you the power to respond differently, too. Instead of retaliating, you can love and forgive, even those who oppose you. So the next time fear starts creeping in, ask yourself what you actually fear more: what people might do, or who God actually is.

- How do you normally respond when others criticize or speak against you?
- What promises of God bring you peace when you feel under attack?
- How can trusting God as your defender free you to forgive your enemies?
Prayer
Ask the Lord to help you rest in His protection and promises when you feel misunderstood or attacked. Pray for a heart that chooses trust over fear and love over retaliation, remembering that your life is secure in Christ.
